I fell into PR 18 years ago when (thanks to my Grandma who was a tea lady there!) I did some work experience at The Body Shop’s headquarters in my home town of Littlehampton. I spent two weeks organising samples for journalists, filing press releases and going to fashion shows. I loved it! Although my PR career didn’t continue along this somewhat glamorous path, I still love it and have worked with some amazing brands and done some amazing things, from launching Apple’s first iMac to bubble-wrapping an entire street for Confused.com.
If you’d like to see more about what I’ve done, have a look at my CV.
Location, location, location.
I live in Penarth, a small town just outside of Cardiff. I’m ideally placed to help businesses in Wales and can provide the added benefit of having worked with national companies, achieving national coverage. Equally, I have significant experience working with Wales-based clients to achieve local presence in the regional press.
As a freelance PR I can travel to any part of the country and travelling to London is easy. Technology means that it’s easier than ever for me to service clients from wherever they’re based but I’m also happy to plonk myself in the offices of the clients I work with.
I have worked with many brands over the past 12 years and have a lot of consumer PR experience, with a brimming contacts book.
From writing annual reports and producing website copy to briefing spokespeople for appearances on the BBC and personally conducting radio interviews, I’ve acquired a vast range of skills. I can help businesses with all aspects of PR. Here’s just a snapshot of the kind of work I’ve been involved with.
CONFUSED.COM – Head of PR
One of the market leading comparison sites and a national major brand, I joined Confused.com when it had little presence in the media beyond advertising. In just 18 months I established a press office, positioned Confused.com as the authority on insurance and energy issues within the personal finance media and received widespread acclaim for the first ever ‘Twitch’
I worked closely with national PR agency Cake to raise awareness of Confused.com away from the money pages through PR stunts and activities such as bubble-wrapping a street
talking the language of love
and finding out exactly what is confusing the nation
BRITISH GAS - PR/Corporate Affairs Manager
I was regional corporate affairs manager at British Gas looking after several regions across the UK. I was part of the team responsible for media relations during the controversial 35% price rise. I managed PR agencies to deliver brand PR campaigns including British Gas Green Streets initiative.
PICTURE FINANCIAL – Head of Communications
As one of the fastest growing businesses in the secured loans industry, I joined Picture at a pivotal time as it catapulted into a negative and misguided media environment. I created and managed the PR strategy both nationally and locally and managed internal communications, events and sponsorship. I reported directly to Marketing Director and Chief Executive.
Sponsorship and Events Coordinator – Principality Building Society
PR senior account manager – Quadrant Media & Communications
Public relations manager -Solutia PR
Senior account executive – Bite Communications
What they say about me. From journalists to friends, from old bosses to clients, here’s what they think.
“Kelly built the PR function at Confused.com from scratch. In a couple of short years she grew our profile to match in a diverse range of areas; covering everything from pet insurance to energy prices. She not only recruited a solid team in the business but grew the importance of PR across the company, enlisting product experts and senior execs to the cause. Kelly’s use of digital media was also groundbreaking with a number of leading digital campaigns. Kelly can be rightly proud of a great track record.” Matt Hunter, Head of Digital, Confused.com
“Kelly is a dynamic and enthusiastic PR professional. An inspirational member of our team at Picture always coming up with excellent ideas.” Graham Donald, Head of Broker, Picture Financial
“Kelly always speaks her mind. She’s tenacious and passionate and knows good consumer PR. She’s always thinking about how the customer will react or what the customer will want to see and hear. She’s creative and always willing to take a risk and stick her neck out if she believes in it, but never forgets the basics of good PR.” Luisa Fernandez, Head of Sponsorship, British Airways.
“She’s really annoying ’cause she’s always right. ” Jodi Scutt, Sister.
“Kelly can’t really cook” Maggie Nicholson, Grandma.
